New ranges of skincare containing hemp are cropping up and promises to be a ‘curing elixir’ to aid a whole number of skin conditions. One brand championing the ingredient, also known as hemp seed oil, is Carun, which uses extracts of hemp in its range. The hemp plant contains a unique compound called cannabinoids.
There are around 60 different types of cannabinoids but THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the most well-known and is what causes the marijuana high.
Hemp contains very little of the psychoactive chemical with Carun products containing around 0.3 per cent whereas marijuana typically contains 20-30 per cent (but can be as high as 38 per cent or even more). The hemp and marijuana plant also contains another important cannabinoid called CBD. CBD acts to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC. Carun hemp products have more CBD, separating it further from marijuana. With anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties, the extract is said to soothe and heal skin conditions such as such as acne, rashes, dry skin, itchy irritated skin, blisters, insect bites, post-trauma and scars.
An exceptionally rich, green oil, is has one of the highest antioxidant levels of any vegetable oil; antioxidants are prized for their anti-ageing properties. It is also full of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium.
